Reconstruction is the period in America after the civil war where America had to rebuild the damage done to the nation. New laws and a new way of life erupted all over the U.S. Laws to protect the rights of the newly freedmen and to aid in reconstruction, but also new laws and new groups came out to make sure that the freedmen didn’t get their rights. Despite this I believe that the reconstruction was positive for the United States because it passed laws and was important in shaping the modern day America. During the reconstruction a the 14th Amendment was passed, it protected the rights of the freedmen. Document A states, “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge [take away] the privileges or immunities of all citizens of the United States.” This was to protect the rights of the citizens of the United States’ rights and to avoid discrimination. This protects the citizens from the state government. Aslo in Document A it states, “nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” This segment states that all the citizens must have equal treatment from the government. These laws are still used today and are brought up in courts all over America. …show more content…
One of those groups formed in the south was the KKK. Document 3 is a cartoon that shows that behavior of the KKK. They will lynch (hang) anybody that will oppose them. Also a new set of laws came out called the Jim Crow laws. They were similar to the Slave Codes because they both restricted the rights of the colored man. Document 4 states “shall not sell to the two races within the same room or serve the two races under the same license.” This a excerpt from a Jim Crow Law explaining how they didn’t want the blacks and the whites to do anything together. This means that they wanted everything to be separate but equal (but we know that it was never
As a result of the Thirteenth Amendment the Fourteenth Amendment gave rights to the newly freed slaves (Authored by LegalMatch Law Library Managing Editor, Ken LaMance, Attorney at Law. (n.d.)). The Fourteenth Amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws. This Amendment was the second of the reconstruction amendments. There are five sections in the Fourteenth Amendment . The first section is the most litigated out of the five. The First section limits of all of the actions of the local and state officials. There are several clauses in this section of the Amendment. Some of those clauses are the Citizenship Clause , Due Process Clause, and Equal Protection Clause. The Citizenship Clause provides a definition of what citizenship is. The Due Process Clause prohibits the local and state officials from taking natural rights away without legislative authorization. The Equal Protection Clause requires all of the states to give equal protection in law to all of the people in its jurisdiction. The three sections after the first out of the five aren’t as litigated as the first one. The fifth section provides Congress with the power to enforce the Fourteenth Amendment's provisions by appropriate legislation (Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. (n.d.)).The Fourteenth Amendment granted citizenship and equal rights to all citizens of
Reconstruction means the rebuilding of a shattered nation. Reconstruction is the era when the boundaries of American freedom was redefined. Slavery was removed. African-American were given right. Laws were written in favor of them for the first time. Black people were given as equal freedom as white people. White people had no one to work for them. Black people who used to work for them now had become their allies. Whereas for black people, churches and school were made for them, rules were being made for them, everything was on their favor. World was changing. It was changing into a better place. Reconstruction witnessed the stabilization of family life, freedom subtly altered relationship within the family.
Under the Mississippi Black Code of 1867, all freed blacks were given the right to be employed, to have their own property and to be taught how to read and write. As you’re seeing, the law had constant government support to ensure equal rights to everybody regardless of the color of their skin. The rights the code granted were denied to them before the Civil War. Despite the grant of certain rights, the Mississippi Black Code also imposed restrictions against the newly freed blacks which constituted denial of basic rights. The code was a reflection of the powerful views in the Southern states. Northerners said these codes as a "Revival of slavery in “. In spite of the abolition of slavery and the amendments to the constitution, the Southern states wanted the racism to continue even during the period of
Reconstruction was a time period of major change in the United States of America for both African Americans and White citizens. After the Civil War, the reconstruction process started out as a failure, but over the years turned into a huge success because of how African Americans were able to live normal lives. Overall, Reconstruction was a success because freedom and growth of equality for African Americans was increased greatly.
Reconstruction was the time between 1863 and 1877 when the U.S. focused on abolishing slavery, destroying the Confederacy, and reconstructing the nation and the Constitution and is also the general history of the post-Civil War era in the U.S. between 1865 and 1877. Under Abraham Lincoln, presidential reconstruction began in each state as soon as federal troops controlled most of the state. The usual ending date is 1877, when the Compromise of 1877 saw the collapse of the last Republican state governments in the South
One of the major issues of the Civil War was slavery, and even with a victory by the North, blacks rights did not improve very much. Throughout individual Southern states, Black Codes were passed in state legislatures to repress the suffrage of black males. “All freedmen, free Negroes, and mulattos…with no lawful employment or business… shall be fined… and imprisoned…” In an effort to counteract these laws, the federal government passed the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. These Amendments were only effective to a minimal degree, because the Southerners found other ways to restrict the opportunities of blacks. Southern whites organized secret societies such as the Ku Klux Klan to intimidate blacks and white reformers. Often times, violence was used by these secret societies to express their views. These Reconstruction policies dealing with blacks were not very efficient, for blacks did not receive equal
The 14th amendment was passed three years after the most gruesome war in American history took place. This war is known as the “Civil War” but in aged southern textbooks it is known as the “War Between the States”. The Civil War was a prime example of why the 14th amendment should be passed. Looking at what influenced the war and what the 14th amendment stood for, showed a common influence. A huge influence on the 14th amendment was freed slaves because of the rights they were entitled to. On July 28th, 1868 the secretary of state issued a proclamation ratifying the 14th amendment. This granted citizenship to all born or naturalized in the United States. The 14th amendment forbids states from denying any person life, liberty or property, without
The fourteenth Amendment from the United States Constitution was adopted in July 9,1868 and was premeditated as one of the Reconstruction Amendments. This Amendment was to address citizenship rights and equal protection of laws. It was also proposed in response to problems related to former slaves forming from the Civil War. Mostly the 14th Amendment includes equal rights because the 1st section of the 14th Amendment States that all people are born or naturalized in the United States and are subject to the juridification thereof, are U.S citizens and no State can enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States. The 15th Amendment was addressed for granting African-American men the right to vote.
Reconstruction is the time period after which the Civil War had occurred. The Civil War brought up many conflicts that people thought differently about. Such as, should slavery still be legal and should they even have the same rights. So citizens decided to take action in what they believe in.
Reconstruction was where our country needed to be rebuilt, the confederate states were controlled by the federal government and rights to African Americans were introduced. Reconstruction took place right after the civil war, from 1865 to the Compromise of 1877. During this short period of time new policies were enacted that changed the social structure of America forever. Black people were given many rights and were started to be treated seriously, from the government down to a regular person. For this reason I believe that Reconstruction was a success.
The southern governments enacted a series of Black Codes that were purposefully meant to keep blacks “as near to a state of bondage as possible.” Blacks could not bear arms, be employed in
The era of Reconstruction was one of good and bad things, mostly bad for the South since they had lost their independence from the North. Reconstruction was to lead the nation to success but most of the things didn’t end successfully.
Reconstruction is the period of rebuilding the south that succeeded the Civil War (1861-1865). This period of time is set by the question now what? The Union won the war and most of the south was destroyed. Devastation, buildings turned into crumbles and lost crops. The South was drowning in poverty. To worsen the situation there were thousands of ex-slaves that were set free by the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13 Amendment. "All these ex-slaves", Dr. Susan Walens commented, "and no place to put them," The ex-slaves weren't just homeless but they had no rights, unlike white man. The government and congress had to solve the issues present in the south and the whole nation in order to re-establish the South. These issues were economical, social and political. The United States had presidential and congressional reconstruction. Reconstruction was a failure, a great attempt to unify the nation. It was a failure due to the events that took place during this period.
The American Civil War ends in 1865 with a union victory, however while the fighting is over conflicts continued after the war in the ever known as Reconstruction (1865-1877). Some people might think that reconstruction was the process of only rebuilding all the buildings in the South that were destroyed during the war. However, reconstruction is only meant to bring the country back together economically, socially, and politically after the Confederate secession. Although the nation faced many difficulties in bringing the country back together, however reconstruction was successful on only some of the major problems.
Reconstruction is the period after the United States Civil War when the southern states were reorganized and reintegrated into the Union in 1865-1877. Reconstruction is probably the most controversial period in U.S. history. The South needed to be rebuilt socially, economically, politically, and physically. In order to do this, President Abraham Lincoln, President Andrew Johnson, and the Congressional Republicans put forth their very best effort to help them out. President Lincoln’s main goal was to uphold the Constitution and keep the country united. The main goal of the Congressional Republicans was to integrate newly freed black as normal citizens into society. Basically, President Lincoln and the Congressional Republicans aimed at enhancing the United States.
