John Bartlett (1820–1905).  Familiar Quotations, 10th ed.  1919.

NUMBER:10420
AUTHOR:Appendix
QUOTATION:Cockles of the heart.
ATTRIBUTION:Latham says the most probable explanation of this phrase lies (1) in the likeness of a heart to a cockleshell,—the base of the former being compared to the hinge of the latter; (2) the zoölogical name for the cockle and its congeners being Cardium, from [greek] (heart).
