Frank J. Wilstach, comp. A Dictionary of Similes. 1916.

Joaquin Miller

Bent like some great bow unstrung.

Flew around like the spray on a storm-driven deck.

Humming … like a hive of bees.

Leapt like a leaping sword.

A wild and desolate moan,
As a sea heart-broken on the hard brown stone.

Quivered like a willow wand.

Rich as a rose can be.

Shone like love’s eyes soft with tears.

Soft as a kiss.

Her touch was as warm as the tinge of the clover
Burnt brown as it reached to the kiss of the sun.

Time eftsoon will tumble
All of us together like leaves in a gust,
Humbled indeed down into the dust.

Her touch was as warm as the tinge of the clover
Burnt brown as it reached to the kiss of the sun.
