§ 9. Smiths
Dictionaries
.
Works on the history of Greek and Latin literature, inclusive of writings where historical narrative and biography are welded into an organic whole with literary criticism, must be left for notice elsewhere. There, notice will, also, be taken, among Sir William Smiths invaluable aids to classical study, of his
Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography
(18449), which materially helped to advance the study of ancient history on critical lines, and that
of Greek and Roman Geography,
which dealt with an indispensable adjunct to, or, rather, an integral part of, that study (18547). His
Dictionary of the Bible
was published in 1863; that of
Christian Biography,
in which Wace was his coadjutor, from 1877 to 1887.
