Matthew Bridges (1800–1894)

MATTHEW BRIDGES, author of “Babbicombe; or, Visions of Memory, and other Poems” (1842), “Hymns of the Heart” (1848), “The Passion of Jesus” (1852), has often been quoted in the hymnals of England and America. The hymn “Crown Him with many crowns,” in various modified forms, has been a great favourite, and his version of the hymn “Lo! He comes with clouds descending” is also in use. Mr. Bridges was born at Maldon, Essex, on the 14th of July, 1800, and educated in the Church of England, but subsequently entered the Church of Rome.
