Lines upon Himself

By Robert Herrick (1591–1674)

  • Robert Herrick was an English lyrical poet. He seems to have had a just appreciation of his own style, for many of his poems have survived very much as he foretold. The exact date of his death is not known, but he was buried on Oct. 15, 1674.

  • THOU shalt not all die; for, while love’s fire shines

Upon his altar, men shall read thy lines,

And learn’d musicians shall, to honour Herrick’s

Fame and his name, both set and sing his lyrics.
