The Unloved
By Alison Buchanan

STEPHEN, son of me,
You will never be born, my dear.
Light of day you will never see,
  And the earth-sounds never hear.

But after I have died,        5
When I come to the courts of the sun—
Though husband-love I have never had,
  And lovers never a one—

You will stand with a ripple of joy
On the lips that have never smiled,        10
And I shall clasp my son at last—
  My child, my child!
