| (AR-uh-fat) The head of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) since 1968 and of the Palestinian Authority since 1994. He supported Saddam Hussein during the Persian Gulf War but is generally recognized as a moderate within the Palestinian leadership. He shared the Nobel Prize for peace in 1994.
