Presley, Elvis

A twentieth-century American rock ’n’ roll singer, known for his distinctive throaty tone in songs such as “Hound Dog” and “All Shook Up.” He was one of the first stars of rock ’n’ roll.  1
‡ When Presley first appeared on television in the 1950s, the gyrations he performed while singing were considered too suggestive for broadcast. The cameras recorded him only from the waist up.  2
‡ Presley died in 1977 while still in his early forties.  3
