NOUN: Buddhism An enlightened being who, out of compassion, forgoes nirvana in order to save others.
ETYMOLOGY:Sanskrit bodhisattva, one whose essence is enlightenment : bodhi, perfect knowledge; see bheudh- in Appendix I + sattvam, essence, being (from sat-, existing; see es- in Appendix I).
