Alteration of earlier abrecock, ultimately from Arabic al-barqq, the plum : al-, the + barqq, plum (from Greek praikokion, apricot, from Latin praecoquus, ripe early ( prae-, pre- + coquere, to cook, ripen; see pekw- in Appendix I).
