PRONUNCIATION:  mäl-tyä
A city of east-central Turkey in the Taurus Mountains. It was the capital of a Hittite kingdom c. 1100 b.c. and was long a strategic frontier outpost. Malatya was annexed by the Ottoman Empire in 1516. Population: 319,700.
