NOUN:1. A condition of noisy excitement and confusion; tumult: “The uproar of the street sounded violently and hideously cacophonous” (Virginia Woolf, Orlando 1928). See synonyms at noise. 2. A heated controversy.
ETYMOLOGY:Probably by folk etymology from Middle Low German uprr : up-, up (from up); see upo in Appendix I + rr, motion; see ker- in Appendix I.
