NOUN: A variety of the common beet having a large yellowish root, used chiefly as cattle feed.
ETYMOLOGY:German Mangelwurzel, alteration (influenced by Mangel, scarcity) of Mangoldwurzel : Mangold, beet (from Middle High German mnegolt) + Wurzel, root; see wrd- in Appendix I.
