PRONUNCIATION:  hgz
NOUN: A hypothetical, massive subatomic particle with zero electric charge whose existence would explain the masses of the elementary particles.
ETYMOLOGY:Fundamental particle of the Higgs field, the hypothetical quantum field responsible for giving subatomic particles their mass, after Peter Ware Higgs (born 1929), British physicist.
