NOUN: Any of various tropical American, mostly epiphytic orchids of the genus Cattleya, much hybridized and extensively cultivated for their showy, variously colored flowers.
ETYMOLOGY:New Latin Cattleya, genus name, after William Cattley (died 1832), British patron of botany.
