| DEFINITION: | To close, finish, come full circle. Oldest form *dheu 2-. Probably related to dheu-2, to die. 1. Suffixed zero-grade form *dh -no- (< *dhu -no-), enclosed, fortified place; hill-fort. a. (i) down1, down3, from Old English d n, hill; (ii) dune, from Middle Dutch d ne, sandy hill. Both (i) and (ii) from Germanic *d naz, possibly from *dh -no-; b. town, from Old English t n, enclosed place, homestead, village, from Germanic *t naz, fortified place, borrowed from Celtic *d -no-, hill, stronghold. 2.
