Carstens, Asmus Jacob
 
 
(äs´ms yä´kôp kär´stns) (KEY) , 1754–98, German historical painter and engraver, b. Schleswig. He studied in Copenhagen and in Italy. He was influenced by the work of Giulio Romano. Carstens was a popular professor at the Berlin Academy where, through such pupils as Peter von Cornelius, he had a great influence on German historical painting. Homer Singing is a characteristic work.
