Celtes, Conradus Protucius
(kn´räds pr´ttss kl´ts) (KEY) , pseud. of Konrad Pickel (kôn´rät pk´l) (KEY) , 14591508, German scholar and humanist. He traveled widely, lectured at several universities, became librarian to Maximilian I, and founded various societies dedicated to classical learning. He was made (1487) first German poet laureate. Of his worksdidactic, lyric, and dramatichis odes in the manner of Ovid and Horace are noteworthy. Celtes discovered the works of the nun Hrotswith (Roswitha von Gandersheim).
