Chomutov
 
 
(khô´mtôf) (KEY) , Ger. Komotau, city (1991 pop. 53,107), NW Czech Republic, near the German border. Chomutov is an industrial center in a lignite-mining region and has industries manufacturing machine tools and various metal goods. Chartered in 1396, it was disputed by Roman Catholics and Protestants in the 16th cent. In the city are the 13th-century Church of St. Catherine and a 16th-century town hall with a museum.
