1867–1928, American zoologist and armor expert, b. New York City, grad. College of the City of New York, 1886, Ph.D. Columbia, 1890. He taught zoology at Columbia (1891–1927), served with the U.S. Fish Commission (1889–92, 1900–1901), and was curator of herpetology and ichthyology at the American Museum of Natural History (1903–26). His important works on ichthyology include Bibliography of Fishes (1916–23). As an authority on medieval arms and armor he became curator (1903) of the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and made it one of the greatest collections of its kind in the world.
