Marmaduke, John Sappington
 
 
(mär´mdk´´) (KEY) , 1833–87, Confederate general in the American Civil War, b. Arrow Rock, Mo. He served in the expedition against the Mormons and in Western army posts. At the outbreak of the Civil War he resigned from the U.S. army and later accepted a commission in the Confederate army. Marmaduke distinguished himself at Shiloh (1862) and was sent to Arkansas and Missouri as brigadier general. Commanding the cavalry on Sterling Price’s raid into Missouri (1864), he was captured at Marais des Cygnes River and was held prisoner until the end of the war. Marmaduke was elected governor of Missouri in 1884.
