industrial city (1990 pop. 9,389), Luzerne co., NE Pa., on the Susquehanna; settled c.1770 by the Susquehanna Company of Connecticut, inc. as a city 1894. It is a mining center for surface anthracite coal. Manufactures include metal, plastic, and paper products; apparel; beverages; and electrical equipment.
