Garey, Thomas Andrew
18301909, American pioneer in citrus culture, b. Cincinnati. He traveled from Iowa to California by ox team (184952). In 1865 he built a citrus nursery on land now a commercial street in Los Angeles. The market for young citrus trees grew, and Garey introduced new varieties, among them a lemon that he called Gareys Eureka. It became one of two main varieties of lemon grown in California. His Orange Culture in California (1882) was a valuable work.
