city (1990 pop. 17,208), seat of Jefferson parish, SE La., on the Mississippi River. A suburb of New Orleans, it produces marble, granite, chemicals, and food products. Founded in the early 19th cent. as Mechanicsham, Gretna merged with McDonoghville in 1913.
