Kirkcaldy
 
 
(krkô´d, –kôl´–) (KEY) , town (1991 pop. 46,356) and district, Fife, E Scotland, on the Firth of Forth. Industries textiles and furniture manufacture and light electrical engineering. Its port engages in coastal trade. Several Flemish-style structures from the later Middle Ages rest near Kirkcaldy Harbor. The district comprises seven villages, including Dysart, strung along the shore, giving rise to the name “Lang Toun.” Adam Smith was born in Kirkcaldy.
