| d. 1682, Scottish military commander. After serving in the Swedish army, he was a major general under his uncle, Alexander Leslie, 1st earl of Leven, in the Scottish army that joined the forces of Oliver Cromwell in defeating the royalists at Marston Moor (1644). He defeated James Graham, earl of Montrose, at Philiphaugh in 1645. By 1650 he himself was supporting Charles II and as commander of the Scottish royalists was defeated by Oliver Cromwell at Dunbar (1650). After Charless defeat at Worcester, Leslie was imprisoned (165160). He was created (1661) Baron Newark after the Restoration. |
