Lewisham
(l´shm) (KEY) , inner borough (1991 pop. 215,300) of Greater London, SE England, on the Thames. It is mainly residential with a large shopping center, but there is some light engineering. Lewisham, which was noted in Elizabethan times for its cattle market and royal dockyard, trades in timber. The writer Christopher Marlowe was killed in a brawl at Lewisham in 1593. Goldsmith’s College, a faculty of the Univ. of London, is in the borough.
