(m lv s ´ ) (KEY) or Monemvasía (mô´´n mväs ´ä) (KEY) , village, S Greece, in the Peloponnesus, on a rocky island joined to the mainland by a mole. In the Middle Ages it was a fortress and an important commercial port, exporting Malvasian or malmsey wine, a type now made in many places. It was (1821) the seat of the first Greek national assembly. |
