| 1829–1907, king of Sweden (1872–1907) and Norway (1872–1905), younger son of Oscar I. He succeeded his brother, Charles XV. He refused to concede to Norway its own consular representation, thus increasing the tension between Norway and the crown. In 1905, Norway completely severed its union with Sweden, and Oscar relinquished the Norwegian throne. During the later part of his reign, Swedish industry made great progress. Oscar was a man of culture and an able musician and writer. His best-known work is a life of Charles XII. His son Gustavus V succeeded him. |
