(p´bäd, –bd), 1857–1944, American educator, b. Salem, Mass., grad. Cheltenham College, 1876, LL.B. Cambridge, 1880. Ordained (1885) in the Episcopal Church, Peabody had founded in 1884 the Groton School, Groton, Mass., modeled on the English public schools. He was its headmaster until he retired in 1940.   1
