(zängkt pöl´t n) (KEY) , city (1991 pop. 50,026), Lower Austria prov., N central Austria. It is an industrial center and rail junction. Manufactures include chemicals, office furniture, hosiery, machinery, textiles, and paper. Chartered in the 12th cent., Sankt Pölten has a Romanesque cathedral (consecrated 1150; rebuilt in the 18th cent.) and a town hall of the 16th17th cent. |
