salpiglossis
 
 
(sl´´pgls) (KEY) , any plant of the genus Salpiglossis of the family Solanaceae (nightshade family), herbs native to Chile and widely cultivated elsewhere as garden annuals for their richly variegated, funnel-shaped blossoms in a variety of colors. Painted tongue (S. sinuata) is the most common in gardens. The genus is classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Polemoniales, family Solanaceae.
