Stryy

(str) (KEY) , Pol. Stryj, city (1989 pop. 67,000), Ukraine, on the Stryy River (a tributary of the Dniester) and in the Carpathian foothills. It is a major rail junction and a center of the Drohobych oil region. The economy depends on machine building, engineering, and various light industries. An old Ukrainian settlement, Stryy was chartered in 1431. It became a flourishing trade center from the 15th to 16th cent. but declined in the 17th cent. Stryy passed to Austria in 1772, to Poland in 1919, and to Ukraine in 1939.
