ATTRIBUTION:Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862), U.S. philosopher, author, naturalist. Quoted in Henry D. Thoreau, F.B. Sanborn (1882).

Remark made shortly before his death to Parker Pillsbury, when asked whether he believed in an afterlife. Brooks Atkinson, in Walden and Other Writings of Thoreau, claimed the remark was made to Thoreau’s closest friend William Ellery Channing. See Thoreau on God.
