QUOTATION:God is subtle, but he is not malicious.

ATTRIBUTION:Albert Einstein (1879–1955), German-born U.S. theoretical physicist. Quoted in Einstein, ch. 14, R.W. Clark (1973).

Remark made in April 1921, during Einstein’s first visit to Princeton University. The words were later carved above the fireplace of the Common Room of Fine Hall in the former Mathematical Institute; in 1946 Einstein gave a freer translation: “God is slick, but he ain’t mean.”
