ATTRIBUTION:Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881), British statesman, author. Quoted by Mark Twain in his Autobiography, ch. 29, Mark Twain (1924), rev. Charles Neider (1959).

The words have never been found among Disraeli’s works; alternative attributions include the radical journalist and politician Henry Labouchère (1831-1912).
