Ingmar Bergman received the D. W. Griffith Award from the Directors' Guild of America for his contribution to film. Bergman's films include: Wild Strawberries (1957), Through a Glass Darkly (1961), Persona (1966), The Passion of Anna (1969), and Fanny and Alexander (1983).
Formation of the “bourgeois” coalition government: Carl Bildt, leader of the conservative Moderate Party, formed a four-party coalition under his prime ministership on Oct. 4, after the resignation of Carlsson's Social Democratic government. Bildt declared the end of the age of collectivism, and proposed a “New Start for Sweden” program, which featured significant decreases in government spending.
