Independent leftist Georgios Vassiliou became president of Greek Cyprus.	1

1993, Feb. 15

Glavkos Clerides, an opponent of the UN plan to unify Cyprus, was elected president of the Greek government.	2

Greek premier Costas Simitis and Turkish premier Mesut Yilmaz signed a pact aimed at improving Turkish–Greek relations on the island of Cyprus.	3

Pres. Glafcos Clerides was reelected to his second five-year term.	4

Both Greece and Turkey sent aircraft to Cyprus when the island nation attempted to purchase S-300 anti-aircraft missiles from Russia. Through the influence of Greek premier Simitis, deployment of the weapons was canceled on Dec. 29.	5

The EU decided to invite Cyprus to apply for membership after it had rejected Turkey earlier in the year. This heightened international tensions between Turkey and Cyprus.	6
