INTERNATIONAL PHONETIC ALPHABET, THE
 
 
(abbreviated IPA) is the set of phonetic symbols used internationally to represent the sounds human beings use in speech. Each symbol represents one sound, and every speech sound, irrespective of language, is (at least ideally) represented by only one symbol. For example: English sinner is [], singer is [] and finger is []; English king is [], and Norwegian kong is [] (rhymes with gong).  1
