Great Neck
 
 
Great Neck, village (1 sq mi/2.6 sq km; 1990 pop. 8,745), a projection of land into L.I. Sound at the NW end of L.I.; bordered by Manhasset Bay on the E and Little Neck Bay on the W; 40°47'N 73°43'W. The area consists of a group of villages, all within North Hempstead township; collectively constitutes a high-income suburb of N.Y. city on the Nassau-Queens border. Includes the villages of Great Neck, Great Neck Estates, Great Neck Gardens, Great Neck Plaza, Harbor Hill, Kensington, Kings Point, Russell Gardens, Saddle Rocks, and Thomaston. There are diverse light and high-technology industries centered on village of Great Neck. The U.S. Merchant Marine Acad. is in nearby Kings Point. F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in Great Neck and placed The Great Gatsby in a setting based on this area.
