Eugene (YOO-jeen), city (1990 pop. 112,669), Lane co., W Oregon, 65 mi/105 km S of Salem, on the Willamette R.; elev.422 ft/129 m; 44°02'N 123°06'W. RR junction. Twin city of Springfield adjoins Eugene on E. A processing and shipping center located in a farming area, it has huge lumbering facilities. Mfg. (food and beverage processing, wood and plastic prods., furniture, chemicals, construction materials, transportation equip. consumer goods, primary metals, machinery, computer chips); mill work. Agr. (nuts, grains, fruit, oats; poultry, sheep, cattle; dairy prods.); nurseries. Eugene has a tourist industry based on its attractive environment and river recreational areas. The city has been marked by steady pop. growth. Eugene is the seat of the Univ. of Oregon, with its noted mus. of art and natural history, NW Christian Col., Lane Community Col., Willamette Science and Technology Center (WISTEC), and the Oregon Aviation and Space Center.
