Chariton (SHER-uh-tuhn), county (759 sq mi/1966 sq km; 1990 pop. 9,202), N central Mo.; Keytesville; 39°31'N 92°57'W. Bounded by Missouri R. (S) and Grand R. (W); drained by Chariton R. Agr. (corn, wheat, soybeans; hogs, cattle, sheep); bituminous coal in area. Some mfg. at Salisbury and Brunswick. Swan L. Wildlife Refuge in NW. Major flooding occurred in 1993. Formed 1820.
