Coatzacoalcos
 
 
Coatzacoalcos (ko-aht-sah-ko-AHL-kos), city (1990 pop. 198,817), Veracruz state, E central Mexico, at the mouth of the Coatzacoalcos R.; 18°10'N 94°25'W. A port on the Gulf of Campeche, as well as the N terminus of RR traffic across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Good highway communications. With Minatitcán the center of Mexico’s petroleum and petrochemical industry. Oil, petrochemical prods., sulfur, and timber are produced and exported. Formerly called Puerto México.
