Barnes, county (1,513 sq mi/3,919 sq km; 1990 pop. 12,545), SE N.Dak.; Valley City; 46°55'N 98°04'W. Agr. area drained by Sheyenne R. Wheat, oats, barley, potatoes, soybeans, other grains; flax; livestock, hogs; flour milling, dairy prods. Metal stampings, electronic equip. L. Clausen Springs in S; L. Ashtabula Reservoir in N, formed by Bald Hill Dam NW of Valley City; Fox and Eckelson lakes in W. There are 2 fish hatcheries near Bald Hill Dam. Organized 1879.
