East Haddam, town (1990 pop. 6,676), Middlesex co., S Conn., on the Connecticut (here bridged), at mouth of Salmon R., and 12 mi/19 km SE of Middletown; 41°28'N 72°23'W. Mfg. (machinery, fish nets, printing, bicycles, plumbing and heating prods., boats, concrete); summer resorts surrounding various lakes and rivers, farming. Home of Goodspeed Opera House where many Broadway plays are perfected before opening in New York City. Includes Moodus, Leesville, and Millington villages, Devil’s Hopyard State Park. Settled c.1670, set off from Haddam 1734.
