Charles Town, town (1990 pop. 3,122), Jefferson co., NE W.Va., in East Panhandle, 16 mi/26 km SSE of Martinsburg; 39°17'N 77°51'W. RR junction. Agr. (grain, soybeans, apples; livestock; horse-breeding; dairying); mfg. (printing and publishing, asphalt prods.). Limestone and dolomite quarrying. Resort. Charles Town Racetrack (thoroughbred racing), Summit Point Raceway are here. Harpers Ferry Natl. Historic Park to NE; Shannondale Springs Wildlife Management Area to SE; Appalachian Trail passes to E; Leetown Natl. Fish Hatchery to NW. John Brown was tried (1859) and hanged here.
