Estherville, city (1990 pop. 6,720), Emmet co., NW Iowa, near Minn. state line, on West Des Moines R., and 23 mi/37 km NE of Spencer; 43°23'N 94°49'W. RR junction. Mfg., trade, and shipping center; industries (meat packing, rendering plants, feed mills, bottling works, RR shops); mfg. (wood and plastic prods., bldg. materials, neon signs, fishing lines, egg processing, golf carts). Sand and gravel pits (S). Iowa Lakes Community Col. (main campus) is here. Just W is site of Fort Defiance (1862), preserved in a state park. Meteorite fell nearby in 1879; large fragments are in mus. in London, Vienna, and at Univ. of Minn. Settled 1857; inc. 1881 as town, 1894 as city.
