Amherst, county (478 sq mi/185 sq km; 1990 pop. 28,578), W central Va.; Amherst; 37°36'N 79°08'W. Mainly in the Piedmont region; rises NW to the Blue Ridge, here traversed by Blue Ridge Parkway and Appalachian Trail (both natl. park units), bounded SW, S, and SE by James R. Part of George Washington Natl. Forest in NW. Mfg. at Amherst; chiefly agr. (corn, hay, apples, peaches; cattle). Titanium ore deposits. Formed 1761.
