Marathon, county (1,576 sq mi/4,082 sq km; 1990 pop. 115,400), central Wis.; Wausau; 44°53'N 89°45'W. Primarily a dairying area, co. is a major producer of cheese; lumbering; agr. (oats, barley, corn, potatoes, alfalfa, hay, ginseng, cranberries; cattle, sheep, hogs, poultry); diversified mfg. at Wausau. Drained by Wisconsin R. and its tributaries (Eau Claire, Big and Little Eau Pleine), Big Rib, and Placer rivers and Big Eau Pleine and Du Bay reservoirs (both in S). Rib Mt. State Park, SW of Wausau, at center, including Rib Mt. (1,940 ft/591 m), winter sports center. N fringe of city of Marshfield in SW.
